I like to drive, on a sunny Sunday afternoon get out there for an easy ride, lookin’ around at the countryside I’m cool, in the zone today, truckin’ along doing 80 ks just slow on down if I’m in your way never mind that line behind, get closer all the time slow down Jack, gotta hold ‘em back ,till I see the passing sign Speed up - at the overtaking lane, step on the gas, don’t let ‘em by, gotta keep ahead of the other guy Speed up - at the overtaking lane put the pedal down, top gear at last, look at everybody going by so fast, speed up, speed up......then Slow down, at the other end slide on back down through the gears, do 75 again say what? say what you say? I don’t know why that crazy fool behind me can’t keep his cool Hang on now, there’s another sign, for a passing lane ahead there’s a lotta room, it’s a double lane, and the blood rush to my head Ah... see... I told you so you overtake at a hundred & forty, no surprise that you got caught he gotcha - but he didn’t get me....and if you’d’a just hung in behind that traffic cop woulda drove on by but wait on now, there’s another sign, for a passing lane ahead there’s a lotta room, it’s a double lane, and the blood rush to my head Speed Up.....

Let's have friends around for dinner, it's ages since we did show off our renovations, and our high-achieving kids perhaps we'll get Samantha, to play the violin and have George recite soliloquies from one of those nice Shakespearian plays he's in. Let’s have friends around for dinner, open something nice perhaps that pinot noir from Central you got Sam to sign remember how we had to chase him down and ask him twice We’ll talk holiday destinations and play our world CDs like the one we stole from that obscure and starving gypsy band we found in Greece, or was it Nice Lets have friends around for dinner, open up our home let everybody know we’re Party Central there’s no point in being hip and fascinating on our own Let’s have friends around for dinner, select them carefully perhaps that couple from the yacht club, I see she drives a Porsche, and he’s director of a finance company they’re just back from Honolulu, they’re not short of a bob She says avoiding penniless investors has become a full time job Let’s have friends around for dinner, share some joie de vie we can always use that story about your Mother being ill if we encounter unexpected incompatibility cos they might not be from Auckland, so we’ll be sympathetic but aloof make out that we’re concerned about our housing prices climbing through the roof.

Well it might not be too clever and it might not be too smart but I try to make my living playing songs on this guitar Travel round the country, livin’ barely mouth to hand make just enough to feed my band I play jazz & blues & country music, sometimes rock ‘n’roll I’ll play anything they ask for, cos it’s all good for your soul but a funny thing I noticed, that I think it’s fair to say to say is all the places that I sing about are in the USA... But I never been to Texas, nor to San Francisco Bay & I never done Route 66, Chicago to L.A. I don’t get the blues in Baton Rouge, nor Memphis, Tennessee & Alabama’s no sweet home for me & I never take the ‘A’ Train up to Harlem or to Queens never played a rag on 12th street nor a house in New Orleans I don’t set my watch to Tulsa time, & Georgia’s never on my mind & I never met the Rose of San Antone But I like to play this music every time I get the chance and I don‘t care if they wanna drink or talk or fight or dance if there’s a western swing band up in Heaven, ‘less I’m wrong when they play them songs about Texas, they gonna let me sing along so I won’t go back to Massachusetts, Maryland nor Maine I don’t know the way to San Jose, nor Amarillo same there’s lots of pretty girls in Arizona, so I’m told, but by the time time I get to Phoenix, I’ll be way too old and I won’t be going to Jackson, I’m not Mississippi bound & I’m not going to Carolina, in my mind or on the ground & they say the lights are always bright on Broadway, but I find I’m never in that New York state of mind.....

Gettin' old & gettin' tired leaves a lot to be desired things I used to do I can't do now the girls I used to squeeze have all got artificial knees and chance'd be a fine thing anyhow I used to like to dance but it's become a game of chance a gamble with the laws of gravity gettin' down is really hip, but it's become a one way trip Gettin' Old & Gettin'Tired is killing me Gettin' Old & Gettin'Tired leaves me very uninspired my mind is like the land that time forgot I retain with clarity events of 1953 but can't be sure I’m wearing underwear or not the Autumn leaves are falling, I hear Waikanae a-calling they'll be bringing out my pills at half past three I get peculiar aches and pains and my foot hurts when it rains getting old & getting tired is killing me Gettin' Old & Gettin' tired leaves a lot to be desired things I used to do I can't do now The tank is down to half but I suppose you gotta laugh cos chance'd be a fine thing anyhow I never like to moan, at least my teeth are all my own, I put them in a glass to keep them clean Gettin' old & gettin' tired leaves a lot to be desired gettin' old & gettin' tired is killing me Gettin' Old & Gettin'Tired is killing me

I wear a suit. that never hung on any rack I had it made don’t it suit me well I wear a tie, and some black Italian shoes made outta calfskin, come on down & have a smell and when I talk, I talk of market opportunities of stocks and shares and iron mines , and redefining bottom lines I know, just what to say and what to do, and where to stand so I can move on up the queue I don’t need you to like me or to ask me out to tea, but I do require your R.E.S.P.E.C.T Don’t you know who I am? Don’t you know who I am? Don’t you know who I am? 2 Hey do I know you, come on , you’ve got about a minute just keep talking while I look around the room I wear a smile, I stick it on at breakfast and I keep it up until late afternoon and when I talk, I talk of market opportunities of bulls and bears and iron mines , and redefining bottom lines I know, just what to say and what to do, and where to stand so I can move on up the queue I’m the cheese and I’m the ham, hey I’m one important man, and I’d ask you what your name is but I just don’t give a damn Don’t you know who I am? Don’t you know who I am? Don’t you know who I am? 3. I wear a suit. that never hung on any rack I had it made, and don’t it suit me well? I wear a smile, I was issued by the company you see my CEO has one as well
